It's blackout day in Dumaguete

Today is another bad business day for the business people of Dumaguete. The city is experiencing a whole day out of electricity! Again! I say again because this is always happening here. What is ironic about the usual out of electricity is that, Dumaguete is situated in a province where the source of electricity is located. The Southern Negros Geothermal Production Field (SNGPF) is located in Palinpinon Valencia, Negros Oriental just a few kilometers away from Dumaguete. This production field is also supplying electricity to nearby provinces like Negros Occidental, Cebu, and Panay Island. But how come these provinces are not experiencing a whole day brownout? It's only here!

Businesses here are the one greatly suffering. Consider this: an internet cafe which is very popular in the city (you can see internet cafes almost every corner of the city) is losing an approximate revenue of 1,200 pesos with minimum number of 10 computer units, a retail shops without standby generator are also out of business today! I, myself, is also affected. I cannot access my online accounts. I cannot post updates to my blog. What more? Everyone is indeed affected.

I just hope that the people concern will do something to the worsening delivery of electricity in the province and in the city where the source is located.

Starting An Online Business From Home

by: J. Elisha Burke

Many people believe that starting an online business from home is difficult. In fact it is quite easy. If you are already familiar with what product you will sell you will need to create or hire someone to produce an online website for you. This website should list the product or products you have available. If you will be selling your own products, make sure that your online business has a name that reflects you and what you offer.

After this has been completed, you should inquire in your local state to learn the guidelines necessary for you to run a business from your home. Many states require that even an online business register with them and receive a business license. You will have to get the necessary forms to request this license.

After you have obtained you license, you should also find out how running an online business from home will affect you tax situation. You would still need to report any income you make from your business, even if you are working at home.

After all this paperwork is completed for you business, it is important to set up your home office for you new job. It is suggested that you have a separate space to conduct your business affairs. A separate phone line that customers can call is also very necessary and I strongly suggest you get a fax machine. You will lose customers if you are not able to be reached by telephone, fax and e-mail. Having a separate phone line from the rest of the house is essential!

Other than a second phone line, it is also a good idea to buy the necessary hardware and software for you home office. You will save lots of money if you have your own fax machine, scanner, and printer. Also it is probably wise to have the latest software additions for word processing and accounting. The accounting software is especially useful for you to keep track of all expenses and revenue for your online business.

When you have established the business and things are going well, it is a good idea to consider outsourcing. This would mean hiring someone to take care of the little jobs that you would have to do such as email or letter correspondence or creating marketing brochures. By doing this, you will be able to focus on the more important areas of making money and marketing your business, which will be key to your success.

Is Business Plan Necessary?

Are you planning to open a new business? Or are you considering expanding your current business ? Or do you need an additional capital? Where do you intend to get the capital, from a bank loan or investors from other people?

Most likely if you are considering for a bank loan, a business plan is necessary. The financial institution is very careful whether you can sustain the business or not. They are also more concern if you can pay back the amount you owed to them plus interest. Other investors will do the same. They will want to see your projected income as well as your suggested repayment plan already laid out. Taking the time to do this is not only important for them, but it gives you a measuring tool to verify if your business is growing properly. You can gage your success on how close to the plan your business has actually performed. Perhaps you'll do worse, or perhaps you'll do better, either way it helps you determine how well your business is getting on. Hence, a business plan is very much needed.

A business plan is a blueprint of your business. It serves as a daily guide. It functions as your personal and intimate advisor. Creating a business plan enables you to see possible obstacles to your business and prepares you to find solutions that will help you overcome them. If you have never seen a business plan nor tried to prepare one, you may be concerned that it is too difficult to create one. However, with the advent of technology most particularly the internt, a lot of free resources are already available even some for FREE. Or you can always hire someone to prepare a business plan. However, I would advice to prepare it on your own simply because it is your business and perhaps just hire some experts to fine tune the process.

There's a free tool at www.bdc.ca which will assist you in creating a business plan. Some of the topics you will be required to explain are your Market, Customer, Competition, Marketing Plan, Research & Development along with financial forecasts.

Your Business Plan will become your guide and silent business partner - indicating where you need to improve and helping you stay one step ahead of your competition. Make it a priority to have this crucial road map for your business.

Pylon launches First Interactive Yearbook

The Pylon, the official yearbook of the Negros Oriental State University System brings the yearbook to the next level by launching the first interactive yearbook yesterday at the Audio Visual Room.

Every year the university is producing a yearbook for the graduating students as a means to relive the memories/experiences during their stay at the university. Since the yearbook was produced more than twenty years ago, changes have been made to meet the expectations of every batch. From an all black and white yearbook to a full color yearbook in 2000. Last year, the pylon made a history by releasing the first yearbook before graduation. This year, the pylon staff is committed to bring the yearbook to the next level. The interactive yearbook.

An interactive yearbook does not replace the traditional yearbook or the printed yearbook. It serves as a supplement integrated with audio, video, graphics. One thing that makes the interactive yearbook very special is that, it is created and developed by the pylon staff. The talents and skills of the staff are utilized. So we can say, it is truly NORSU made!

Kudos to the pylon staff for this innovative project!

FERN-C My Vitamin C

I have been taking different kinds of vitamin C before to combat stress, cough and colds. But right now, I have discovered this vitamin c that is tummy friendly, non-acidic, and has lots of benefits. I am talking about FERN-C. So read on to know more about this vitamin C.

YOUR BEST PROTECTION AGAINST INFECTIOUS DISEASES LIKE BIRD FLU & DENGUE. HELPS FIGHT DAMAGING EFFECTS OF FREE RADICALS & CANCER

VITAMIN C is a water soluble antioxidant that is essential for life and for maintaining optimal health. It is required for at least 300 metabolic functions in the body. There are very few, if any, biological functions that do not require Vitamin C. Vitamin C plays a vital role in keeping the immune system working efficiently and helps build collagen, the stabilizing tissue in the bone, muscle and skin. As an antioxidant, Vitamin C is one of our best defenses against the celldamaging effects of free radicals. Almost all animals and plants produce their own Vitamin C. There are some exceptions, such as humans and a small number of other animals. Since the body cannot manufacture Vitamin C, it must be obtained through diet in the form of supplements. The non-acidic Vitamin C is a remarkably effective form, especially for those suffering from chronic illnesses such as cancer. This type of Vitamin C enters the body four times faster than standard acidic forms and stays in the body tissues longer.

Fern-C is Vitamin C in Sodium Ascorbate form. It is NONACIDIC (alkaline), With a pH range of 7.5 to 7.8. You can take as much FERN-C as you want without the negative effects of highly acidic Vitamin C tablets, like gastric irritation, bloating, and intestinal irritation,. Since FERN-C is safe, it was further classified by BFAD as an OTC (over-the-counter) product (no need for prescription). Vitamin C per Philippine Generics Law is known as Ascorbic Acid.

So what makes Fern-C different from other leading vitamic C in the market?
Fern-C
• Alkaline-based• pH range of 7.5 to 7.8• Natural Vitamin C• Can be taken as much as 10,000-20,000 mg. a day; safe and effective. The higher the dosage the better.• In crystallized powder to preserve effectivity and pureness.• Dissolves quickly and is absorbed by the body 5 to 8 times faster than standard acidic Vitamin C tablets.• Can be taken either before or after meals; non-acidic,tummy-friendly.• Body’s absorption is up to 95%; only 5% is being flushed out.• Can be taken by persons with ulcer and diabetes.

Acidic Vitamin C
• Acid-based• pH range of 2.5 to 3• Standard Vitamin C maximum dosage is only 1,000 mg. a day; with more than 1,000 mg., body can not tolerate acidity.• Normally in tablet form with starch ingredient. Thus, not 100% pure and natural,.• Dissolves slowly.• Should be taken after meals to prevent hyper-acidity.• Body’s absorption is only 15-25%; 75-85% is flushed out through urination, bowel movement and perspiration.• Not advisable for persons with ulcer and diabetes (occasionally).

So, do you think it's now high time to change your vitamin C? Now is the right time. Take Fern-C!

Don't Waste Your Time - Use it Wisely

by: Andrew Grant

Do you waste time? Are you lazy and indolent or are you continuously on the go, using every minute to the maximum?

If you are in the first category, there are a lot of very obvious things you can do to improve, but in this article I want to concentrate on those of us who are already using our time constructively and examine how you can squeeze even more from your day.

You may think that your life is so full that this is impossible, but I recently ran an inventory of how I used my time and realised that there was still some room for improvement. Here's what I discovered.

Timespace #1 – For years I avoided doing any kind of exercise. It was pretty easy for me, I had been skinny all my life and even though I wasn't too fit, I was still the right weight. As I got older, though I realised that I had to take my body a bit more seriously. Since then I have become a moderate, regular exerciser; I now go running for half an hour every second day and visit the gym three times a week. No problem there; I get satisfaction from using my time well and I appreciate the results. However, I calculated that I am spending about five hours per week doing great things for my body, but nothing for my mind. So now when I'm pounding the streets or straining at the weights, I use the opportunity to listen to self development programs on my I-Pod, to concentrate on goal visualization, to practice affirmations or just focus on being grateful for all the good things in my life. And there's a bonus too; because the blood is racing through my veins, my brain is more alert and better prepared to learn and grow.

Timespace #2 – I drive a lot. My business requires a good deal of travel and most of it is done in the car. I used to listen to music on the radio or go into an almost trance-like ‘auto pilot' mode, usually to escape the tedium of long distance driving. Now, though, I put a self development CD in the player, or a language course, or again, I use the time to practice visualizations and affirmations. The privacy of your little tin box allows you to shout, sing, laugh or mumble. Who cares? You are on your own. It's your space.

Timespace #3 – Finally, this one is not so much about finding extra time as making better use of the time I thought I was using wisely. My personal time audit showed me that I was wasting a whole hour, sometimes more, at the beginning of the day catching up on the overnight e-mail load and then planning what I was going to do for the rest of the day.

I prided myself on being an efficient time warrior, but I now realise, that I was missing one of the biggest mistakes of all.

So how did I fix that? Simple. I changed two things. Firstly, I now do my planning, the night before, by taking ten minutes, near to the end of the evening and writing down everything I want to achieve the next day. The bonus here is that overnight, my mind works on the issues even while I sleep, so by the time I get started next day, I am far better prepared.

Secondly, I leave my e-mail inbox until lunchtime. I spend the morning getting through the goals I assigned the night before and then just before I take a break for lunch, I race through my inbox. That way, I find I already feel good about what I've done so far in the day, my mind is much more focused and I don't get distracted.

So no matter how efficient you think you are, take a look again at your day and I'll bet you can find some extra layers of time, you never knew you had. Good hunting.

Acidity verses Alkalinity

by: Glenn Antoine

While I originally started to avoid this subject like the plague, I felt the need to at a minimum address it because there are so many widely differing view points on what this actually means, what to do about it and how this really affects your overall health.

I was very happy to find that the Chief Science Officer at Univera LifeSciences, Steven Cherniske, had published a very informative article, “The Acid Alkaline Mystery Solved”, on this very subject. For any of you that have read any of Stephen Cherniske’s work, you will not be surprised to see that it comes complete with all the references that you could hope for and the straight hard facts on this very confusing subject. As a result of this finding I am not going to attempt to do the subject justice, by trying to recreate an article of equal caliber. Verses re-inventing the wheel I am going to simply hit some of the high points for those of you who would prefer the cliff notes version. For those that would like to read all of the details I will leave that to Stephen and his article, “The Acid Alkaline Mystery Solved”.

First of all what is an Acid or for that matter an Alkaline substance? These substances are measured on a pH scale with water being neutral at 7.0. With values less than 7.0 being acid and the lower the pH value the stronger the acid. As you may have guessed alkaline (or base) substances have a value greater than 7.0 up to a maximum of 14. By now you may be wondering where our bodies should fall on this scale. First of all when we speak of an acid/alkaline balance in the body we are talking about the pH balance of our blood and tissues that should remain in a fairly narrow range of about 7.4 – slightly alkaline.

The real heart of the matter here is the byproducts of the digestion of foods that we consume and absorb. The biggest contributors to the fact that ACIDOSIS is at an all time high are the facts that most Americans are consuming beef and/or poultry multiple times per day, Americans are now consuming more soft drinks than water, consumption of coffee (caffeinated & decaffeinated) and lastly the processing of many of our foods have removed all of the alkaline forming minerals. When thinking about the foods that we consume you can not take the natural state of a food as the prime indicator of how that food will interact with our bodies. As an example, most fruits when consumed will result in an alkaline ash residue once digested even though naturally they maybe very high in acid in their natural state, even oranges.

The primary acid forming foods in your diet contain the minerals, sulfur, phosphorus and iron. Typically you will find these minerals in proteins, such as meat, fish, poultry, eggs, grains, most nuts and soft drinks (due to the high phosphate levels). The minerals potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium form alkaline reactions in the body and are found primarily in fruits and vegetables, and so these foods are classified as alkaline forming foods. As many of you are aware the consumption of alkaline-forming vegetables and fruit is at an all-time low. This has resulted in an increase of acidosis which accelerates catabolic damage and impairs our bodies anabolic repair processes. One of the best examples is the fact that it has been known for a long time that diets high in protein greatly increase the risk of osteoporosis. While there are many theories on this subject it appears that the body is simply taking from one part of the body to help support other systems that have been depleted due to the body staying in such a high state of acidosis.

In an attempt to help us make this shift in our diet Univera LifeSciences has created MetaGreens™. MetaGreens™ is extraordinary mix of land and sea vegetables, all of which are rich in alkaline minerals. I take great comfort in knowing that these greens are pesticide-free, grown on high-nutrient soil that has never been chemically fertilized. Additionally, Univera LifeSciences takes great care to ensure that the vegetables are harvested at the peak of their nutrient value and then these ingredients are processed by low-temperature dehydration to retain all the raw food goodness and manufactured in small batches to maximize freshness.

While the words “stomach acid” have a negative connotations for many of you it is because you have been brain washed over the years by the non-stop advertisements about how excess stomach acid is causing all of your discomforts. While I would be able to spend days address this issue I will pass. For those of you that want to read a very well presented explanation of why our stomach acids are in fact a good thing please read Stephen Cherniske’s article. For myself I continue to rely on Univera LifeSciences Aloe Gold product to help keep my digestive track in order and functioning properly. For those of you that have not tried Aloe Gold take a moment to ask anyone that have used the product and I am very certain you will hear fantastic praises about how it has helped them with numerous digestive track disorders.

I hope that you have found this latest entry to be of interest and most of informative. While I have barely scratched the surface here I hope that I have helped to clear up some of the confusion associated with the Acid Alkaline debate. For those of you that are hungry for more on this I can not recommend highly enough that you read Stephen Cherniske’s article the Acid Alkaline Mystery Solved.

Ma'am Francie has a new N95

The department chair of the Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT) of Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) has just acquired a brand new N95 cellphone. I have been thinking of buying this unit before but instead I was just able to buy the N73 because I can't afford to buy it. The cost is still very high- PhP28,000.00 plus.

N95 has this features: 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, Bulit-in GPS mapping, DVD-like quality footage , View emails with attachment. Its operating frequency is something can be boost of: EGSM 900 MHz , GSM 850 / 1800 / 1900 MHz , WCDMA 2100 MHz , and
Automatic switching between bands and modes. Wow it's really amazing gadget!
And look at its dimensions: Volume: 90 cc , Weight: 120 g , Length: 99 mm , Width: 53 mm ,
Thickness (max): 21 mm . It's like you are carrying a piece of paper. huh!

I know there are still a lot of exciting features of N95. And I definitely know Ma'am Francie is exploring it.
